Electric assisted bicycle reaches up to 70Kph?

Behold, the Optibike, for it is pimp.

Mainpage

The downside, they're "only" $5,495... As a plus, that's actually inexpensive for a high-end scooter or moped. As a minus, I can't afford one, and if I had that much money I'd probably put that money towards something much less efficient.

This is a great option for someone who has a long commute by bike, but wants to bike, and also has a lot of spare cash floating around. I think these hybrid vehicles will become more and more popular as time goes on. The technology will get better, and keeping up the Oil Habit will get more and more expensive.

And frankly, it looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

Thanks Gizmag for the tipoff.

Mobility vs. Car

Treehugger has a really interesting post on, well, the terminology we use to define our freedom. (That's sorta the topic!)

The New York Times announced on Saturday 27 May that according to the AAA nearly 38 million people will travel this Memorial Day weekend and most of them will drive on America’s roads and highways. That is a lot of cars, a lot of emissions, a lot of money on gas and a crazy amount of time in traffic. And despite rising gas prices and energy security fear, it is not yet changing consumer habits. Hundreds of thousands of us will be sitting tail-to-tail in our half empty vehicles, while empty seats on planes or trains or buses pass us by. The old model has yet to be challenged much then. And the white space for innovation remains untouched.

What if you replace ‘car’ with ‘mobility’?

This speaks to ideas in business like Autoshare here in Toronto, which I so would much rather use than owning a car.

The importance of the commute.

Note: Re-posted from Simon's Fileix Blog.

Update for Devlab: I'm going to try to re-do this with factors learned from the Get Rich Slowly blog. I don't think the calculator creates a good financial estimate based on the variables I try to calculate. The time factors are spot on in my opinion, but my money figures are probably way off.

From the original post:
My current commute to work is maybe 30 minutes by bicycle (I'll have it down to 15 by the end of the summer). I've got showers at work since the building has a gym, I have the luxury of bringing my bike indoors, and I've got a casual dress code. I ride in the rain when I have to, but it's not a big deal.

Were it not for these factors it would be more difficult.

A factor that is incredibly important to me is the location of my workplace in relation to where I live.

Before I was working at my current job (which rocks), I worked about an hour and ten minutes away from my apartment on a good day. On a bad day the commute could be a full hour and a half. Coupled with my job satisfaction, it really started to wear down on me.

It adds up, fast. Especially if you value your time.

So rather than take a job that pays well with a long commute, I'd rather take a job that pays decent, but that is more local. I really got sick of paying $X ammount of my salary just to GET to work in the first place. I've come up with a form that attempts to calculate this to demonstrate just how much of a chunk your commute can take out of your life.

As a shortcut, you can submit the form below.

Required Variables

Value

Estimated time in minutes getting to work.

Estimated time in minutes getting home.

Optional Variables

Value

Hours Per Day

Days Per Week

Weeks Per Year

Estimated Monthly Total Cost of Transportation

Your Estimated Hourly Pay

Woah: Lego aircraft carrier

so some crazy man has built an amazing aircraft carrier out of lego. It's an amazingly detailed piece of work. Check out the site, and also this Digg thread discussing it.

Windows Vista Preview

I've been slagging Microsoft a lot lately, but I think it's time I gave them a break.

I'm afraid Spore is quite real after all.

One of the games I had written off as vapourware, simply because the concept sounded far too cool to ever come to light, is Spore.

See the E3 Trailer here.

Another demo vid below.

CAN NOT wait... It'll probably come out for something other than the Wii though, of course, just to make me buy every dang console.

Update: More, from Evan.
