Apparently this happened to Colby Navarro in March of 2003 as part of a large meteorite shower in Chicago.
From the article: On the night of March 26th, shortly before midnight, residents of several Midwestern states witnessed a dazzling ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù and, to many, frightening ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äù spectacle in the sky.
Frightening? No kidding!

Luckily this isn't a regular occurrence. Meteorites seem to do a lot of damage.
